How to enter and interpret investment returns

Performance information should be entered (and interpreted) in conjunction with both the Performance Data Reported and the Return on Investment field.

Example A:

3 Year value field = 30
Performance Data Reported = 31/12/2003
Return on Investment = Actual

This indicates that the investment returned 30% per annum (as an average) for each of the three years 2001, 2002, 2003.

Example B:

3 Year value field = 30
Performance Data Reported = 31/12/2003
Return on Investment = Cumulative

This indicates that the investment returned an accumulated (cumulative) return of 30% at the end of three years.  This equates to a individual yearly return significantly lower than 30%!

Naturally the ROI (return) is unable to be determined beyond the date contained in the Performance Data Reported field.

When entering data in any of the performance fields, always seek to ...

  1. Update all fields relating to investment returns (as these are all relative to the Performance Data Reported field)
  2. Update the Performance Data Reported field with the date of when the Performance figures were calculated / reported.
  3. Update the Return on Investment field to reflect whether the return figures are Actual returns calculated as an average and valid for each individual year, or a cumulative return shown as the total return at the end of the period.

Yearly Returns field examples ...

1 Year:  A value of 30 (ie 30%) in the 1 Year return field indicates that was the Return on Investment (ROI) for the 1 year ended as at the date listed in the Performance Data Reported field.

3 Years:  A value of 32% in the 3 Year return field may indicate (a) the investment achieved a return equivalent to 32% in each of the three individual years, or may indicate that the return was compounding and the cumulative return was 32% at the end of three years.  You must refer to the Return on Investment field

"...weakly regulated with some investor recourse" means the country provides some degree of control over investment operators, however may not be 100% reliable to combat corruption or poor legal recourse for foreign (or local) investors.

"...is not regulated" means there is no body that effectively ensures investors receive some protection from unscrupulous operators.

Examples:  Most financially sophisticated countries such as USA, Japan, Australian, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, etc all are renown for having stringent guidelines controlling the operation of investment providers and operators.

Developing nations and certain tax havens may have some level of corporate governance and investor recourse, but not enough to provide as much comfort as a "strongly regulated" jurisdiction.

Poorer nations, or those with rampant corruption and lack of good government control, may give investors little or no support in recovering money.

Level of success experienced

This should ideally be based on the due diligence performed by the person entering the record (yourself) or another 3rd party person independent to the investment.

The more actual investors that can be contacted the better.  Be sure to try to substantiate the profits / losses wherever possible with supporting documentation (everyone likes exaggerating their winnings and losers don't like admitting losses).
